Music theory lessons speed up music lessons

Music theory training starts with learning the vocabulary and language of music. Each element can be understood as written in music notation, on the instrument, and when heard in sound. These three ways of knowing and understanding are not easily connected because the paths of learning differ for each. The instrument is learned by demonstration and physical motion.
Learning music notation requires knowledge of staff and written symbols. Ear training requires that the concepts of pitch, interval, scale, and chord be connected with sound. The results of not connecting ear training, instrument study, and music reading leave musicians with limited skills. It is easy to go down one path and lose sight of another. Thus we have musicians that play by ear but cannot read music or those that read but cannot play by ear or improvise. Music students who combine music lessons with instrument study and ear training tend to make the most progress and become the most versatile musicians because these skills reinforce one another.

Get started with piano lessons

Playing the piano is a skill that can provide joy and enrichment for a lifetime. One of the most enjoyable parts of learning to play the piano is the opportunity to interact with other musicians.

Piano lessons can be started at almost any age, and how quickly the student progresses will depend on age and previous musical experience. Very young students might stay at a "beginner" level for several years, as the physical coordination and cognitive skills required to play the piano are still developing. For an older child or adult, most of the basic skills needed have developed already and simply need to be trained, so progress will happen more quickly. It might take a year or so for a student with no previous musical experience to become comfortable with note or chord-chart-reading, playing with the hands together, and playing chords in addition to melodies. Don't be discouraged if progress seems slow at first. It may take two to three years to advance to the intermediate level, but once there, a student will be comfortable enough with the keyboard and with chords and melodies, to enjoy playing almost any popular song and many classical pieces. Moving from intermediate to advanced level, a student of classical or jazz piano will begin learning more theory and music history in addition to more advanced repertoire.

A student learning popular music might start to make the left hand chord progressions they have learned more complicated by adding in arpeggios and rhythmic variations. They might also begin arranging songs or writing some of their own.

The History of the Piano

When talking about the history of the piano mention must be made of the early instruments that paved its way.

The first historical mention of instruments is in Genesis 4:21. The King James Version reads as follows: "And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ". The first instrument in history to have a keyboard was the Hydraulis, the precursor of the modern organ. It was built in Greece about 220 B.C. By the Second Century A.D. the organ was commonly used at important festivities in Greece and the Roman Empire.

The earliest keyboards were played with the hands, wrists, fists, knees, or feet. Up to the 13th Century the scales were diatonic ssrather than the twelve tone chromatic scale we use today grand piano.

The piano is founded on earlier technological innovations. The 14th and 15th Centuries saw the development of different kinds of keyboard stringed instruments. Some came with hammers, including the chekker, dulce melos, and clavichord. Some were plucked instruments, including the virginal, spinet and harpsichord.

The modern piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655–1731) of Padua. He was an expert harpsichord maker, employed by Ferdinando de' Medici, Grand Prince of Tuscany, as the Keeper of the Instruments. The first piano he built was about the year 1700 or 1698.
