Why Study Music Theory

Music lessons is an essential tool to intermediate and advanced musicians, especially to those who plan on playing or composing professionally. No matter how good your ear is, you should still learn music theory. It will simplify composing, allow you to write what you hear in your head, allow you to write if you have trouble hearing music in your head, and will allow you to communicate with other musicians. Improvisation is also a good thing to learn, especially if you plan on performing jazz pieces, rock pieces, pop pieces, etc.

The first thing musicians should learn about music theory is notation: the staff, clefs, note names, rhythms, rests, intervals, meter and time signatures, key signatures, and dynamics. The next things musicians should learn are scales and chords (harmony). After that ,the next things to learn are melody, phrases, and musical forms. If you have you learned all of the above then you will have a firm grasp of music theory.
